The Three Early Piano Sonatas, WoO 47, Kurfürstensonaten were composed by Beethoven in 1782 and 1783, when he was eleven and twelve years old. Though lacking a distinct musical identity, the sonatas show a certain level of precocity and serve as a precursor to his later works in the same form.

The first movement - Allegro cantabile - from the first sonata in the group - in E flat - is set as an alternative piece in List A for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) 2013/14 Piano Syllabus and, sits rather nicely as a real alternative to the three pieces in the book itself. It may be used until the the March 2015 session, if necessary.

In the exam situation, you would not be expected to play the repeats, taking the ’2nd time bar’ on both occasions.
