We began with IMPS 3 and not IMPS I since, by their very nature, IMPS are rather wily and travel in packs. And IMPS is all in caps so they don't feel so small…One may be tempted to think seven IPMS are too many, but clearly you've been hitting the crack pipe.
This rather innocent sounding, fluttering, babbling piece is a sinister and greedy 5/8 beast. Don't be fooled. It begins in A Lydian. From the outset, the repeating five note figure (in 5/8) in the upper voice (E-D#-C#-B-C#) serves as a counter-melody in a polyrhythm. The other three note figure (A-B-C#) in the bass is in 7/8. We modulate to E Lydian at m. 21 with the A# signaling the change. The transformed five note figure is now E-D#-C#-B-A#. At m. 27 the voices flip and the bass takes on a more scalar feel with greater motion. MM. 25-42 will take extreme care but will be well worth the trouble - probably…
The "IMPS" pieces share little thematic material yet make the same sinister and haunting aura about them. I sincerely hope that you enjoy this piece as well as the other "IMPS" pieces.
