We must begin with IMPS 3 and not IMPS 1 since, by their very nature, IMPS are rather wily and travel in packs. And IMPS is all in caps so they don't feel so small…
The excerpt begins at m. 1 with a whole tone motif (C#, B, A, G, D#), all slurred (left hand only). At m. 5, the figure, and ostinato really, is joined by a largely right hand melody using the same whole tone scale, yet extending it one tone, down to F. At m. 13, a fragment of the opening ostinato motif is introduced in the bass while the upper voice, a variation on the initial melody is played on the off-beats of the ostinato with the illusion that something is being played very fast when it's simply two figures being played 'a tempo'.
Though the "IMPS" pieces share little thematic material yet make the same sinister and haunting aura about them. I sincerely hope that you enjoy this piece as well as the other "IMPS" pieces.
