Solo Classical Guitar - "IMPS IV" is the second solo classical piece in the "IMPS" series, NOT to be confused with any of my other sinister series, that pay tribute to Fiends (not friends) and other horrible beasts of the night and to the marvelous influences, much to many's dismay and chagrin, they have had on my person and my composing. We began with IMPS 3 and not IMPS 1 since, by their very nature, IMPS are rather wily and travel in packs. And IMPS is all in caps so they don't feel so small…

The excerpt begins at m. 1 with a rollicking quartal/quintal 6/8 figure. Cross-rhythmic devices and accents are employed throughout. At m. 13 a broad motif is stated that returns in various forms throughout the remainder of the piece. It is based on the octatonic collection (Db-Eb-Fb-Gb-G-A-Bb-C). A harmonic minor snippet is then borrowed from the octatonic collection at m. 21 to construct a counter-melody to the the first and the two enjoy a rather intimate relation for the remainder.

Though the "IMPS" pieces share little thematic material yet make the same sinister and haunting aura about them. I sincerely hope that you enjoy this piece as well as the other "IMPS" pieces.
