Dvor?k's eight Humoresques are among his last works for keyboard; composed in 1894, they are followed only by the Two Pieces, B. 188 ("Berceuse" and "Capriccio"), written later the same year. As such, they represent the composer's mature synthesis of the character piece genre with his innately spontaneous sense of melody and the ever-present influence of his native Czech folk music. Of the eight pieces, the seventh (originally in G flat) is the best known; as with all of Dvor?k's most successful piano works, it exhibits his talents for rhythmic originality and idiomatic textures that lie gratefully under the fingers. All eight of the Humoresques are, at times, reminiscent of Johannes Brahms in their combination of relatively conservative musical language, robust textures, and warm tunefulness.

This arrangement features a supplemental third violin part with an additional bass part for use with string orchestra.
