Charles Lockhart (c.1738-1815) was a blind organist who lived most of his life in London. "Carlisle" is the best-known of his hymn tunes. The words of James Montgomery's very popular hymn were written in 1824 for a Wesleyan Sunday School anniversary. They now appear in very many hymnbooks throughout the world.
