Baines's Rhapsody in F# Minor was inspired by a trip to see the Catterall Quartet perform in February 1920.
The 7-minute piece is in one movement. The slower Andante section uses material later reworked in the short Poem for piano and orchestra (1921) - yet to be performed in public.
The Rhapsody is also notable for another distinctive Bainesian coda, fading away - unresolved - into the ether.
