This short Andante is a reworking of the 3rd movement of Baines's String Quartet in E Major (1917-18). The Andante was performed in public for the first time on 11 March 1922 (the final year of Baines's short life), when the Sheffield String Quartet included it in their programme at the 300-seat Tempest Anderson Hall in York (part of the Yorkshire Museum). The programme also comprised works by Elgar, Beethoven and Vaughan Williams's 'On Wenlock Edge' (with renowned composer/organist Edward Bairstow on piano).
