The Aubade for string quartet is an early work from Baines's teenage years. Nevertheless it foreshadows elements of what was to become his mature style beofre his premature death in 1922. A strong melodic character, unexpected chromatic twists and what was to become an almost trademark enigmatic coda are all present in this 10-minute miniature.
