‘The Sentry’s Song’ is the opening number in the second act of Iolanthe (or The Peer and the Peri). Private Willis sings of the thoughts that occupy his mind while he is on night duty outside the Palace of Westminster. Written when Gilbert and Sullivan were at their creative peak, Iolanthe draws on one of Gilbert’s favourite themes – the havoc caused when males intrude upon a calm and orderly female community.
