An emotional tune from Gilbert & Sullivan's Princess Ida, carefully arranged for mixed woodwind trio of flute, oboe and clarinet in B-flat

Princess Ida (or Castle Adamant) is a satire of several controversial topics of the Victorian period – feminism, the education of women and Darwinian theories of evolution. The title character is the founder of a women’s university, which teaches the doctrine of female superiority.

Princess Ida is the only three act operetta amongst the Gilbert & Sullivan canon. ‘I Built upon a Rock’ features the final act. Ida sings of her devastating discovery that the solidarity that she relied upon – the support of her fellows against the invasion of a male army, determined to force her into marriage – has crumbled. She will have to make a stand alone.
