Neopolitan Song clearly belongs to the former category. It features in a collection of short piano pieces written ‘for the young’ in the summer of 1878. Tchaikovsky used an orchestrated version of the piece in Act 2 of his ballet Swan Lake, in which the melody is played on a cornet. This arrangement is for trio of flute, oboe and clarinet.
