The first piece, Poco lento e sonore explores a fragmentary melodic idea set against a colouristic background. The second piece briefly alternates a Presto energico idea with Grave static chords before drawing the two elements together. The third piece, Poco scherzoso con moto begins to reassert the importance of individual pitches, leading to a statement of a short, introspective melody (Poco meno mosso) before a brief reprise of the opening material. The fourth piece, Largamente is set in a static landscape inhabited only by germs of ideas, melodic impulses but no lines. In the fifth piece, Molto legato, the melodic impetus re-emerges as a single-line, punctuated by a colouristic passage. The final piece is a Prestissimo Perpetuum mobile that settles into a sea of slowly changing harmonies, exploring the challenge of composing a piece without melodic and melodic/rhythmic small-scale structures.
