Opus 20 Symphony No. 1, 1st Movement � The Barbarian Awakes This movement depicts the mood swings of a Barbarian as he gradually awakes, needless to say, feeling the effects of a hangover! The mood swings are depicted through a jig-saw of ideas which seamlessly link together with the help of the occasional recurrence of a varied figure of 4 notes, based on the opening figure of the movement played by the strings. The movement starts ponderously but soon takes on a driving inertia due to the various interwoven ideas to maintain, hopefully, the listener�s interest. Play the mp3 for a good rendition. Volume improved-might "blow your socks off" towards the end!! Playing back the score midi file will not give correct results because the changing harmonies require �correct� instrument sounds to achieve the required orchestral colour, a vitally important factor. A combination of GPO string sounds and Roland Sound Canvas SC-55 sounds (for the remaining instruments) gives a better result than �all GPO� or �all SC-55� sounds. The only downside with this approach is the occasional slight loss of synchrony between �GPO notes� and �SC-55 notes�. The inspiration for this movement came by way of a Mr JB who occasionally visits this site. Ideas are beginning to form for other movements.
