Program Notes:
"This piece was composed for the 2008 Honolulu Symphony Orchestra Reading Session. It is semi-programmatic, meaning that while I may have had particular sketches of program ideas while composing, the music is not meant to follow any specific story. The title suggests the piece may be applied to a fantasy fiction or epic/mythical genre, and it is true that while composing this piece I did have images in my head of a hero walking through the forest, entering a dark cave, and battling a powerful enemy, only to have a somewhat tragic (or beautiful?) finish. To be honest I would really like listeners to simply use their own imaginations; there is no reason why this piece should be limited to one programmatic interpretation."
Performance Notes:
-All trills follow the WRITTEN key signature in transposed parts, unless altered with an accidental or small notehead (indicating the upper pitch).
-Glissandi should last the duration of the note from which they sound.
-The fermata in m. 88 should be held out for at least six seconds for maximum dramatic effect (with a swell, if desired).
-The timpani at mm. 106-114 is meant to imitate a bass drum and may be played instead with a small concert bass drum if equipment and personnel are available.
-Horn overtone effects, string senza vibrato, and other special effects may be canceled with the the instruction ord. (ordinario)
