I composed this little tune for my woodwind methods class. The idea was that we incorporate some "advanced" techniques; I included harmonics, trills, and a bend as well as a wide range. Much of the material is from the end of my orchestra piece "Of Myth and Magic," rewritten for a solo flute rather than two.
The title refers to the fact that life goes on, despite loss and hardship. In "Of Myth and Magic" this tune appeared at the end, suggesting a tragic ending to the events in the rest of the piece. As I composed the original, I pictured grey skies over a little village next to a forest. Most of it was abstract; there were no people nor was it an actual place, but the overall melancholy feeling was there. Maybe someone had died…maybe for love? Who knows. But there was this heavy empty feeling inside and I wanted the music to portray that.
