Similar to much of my other music, this piece incorporates lot of contrasting musical material, some bearing no resemblance to anything else. Much of it references my video game/film music interest which in 2000 prompted me to try my hand at composing, and I have been happily doing so ever since. It is semi-programmatic, meaning that while I may have had particular sketches of program ideas while composing, the music is not meant to follow any specific story. The title suggests the piece may be applied to a fantasy fiction or epic/mythical genre, and it is true that while composing this piece I did have images in my head of a hero walking through the forest, entering a dark cave, and battling a powerful enemy, only to have a somewhat tragic (or beautiful?) finish. To be honest I would really like listeners to simply use their own imaginations; there is no reason why this piece should be limited to one programmatic interpretation.
This piece was originally for full orchestra, composed for the 2008 Honolulu Symphony Orchestra Reading Session. This version for chamber orchestra was completed in October 2010 for my composition recital.
