Modeled after the mechanical-sounding infantry march Preussiens Gloria (also included in this volume), and featuring a ‘cranking’ motif with a steadily grounded downbeat, Machina Volaticus reflects on the vital service of the ground crews, their hard work and dedication to the maintenance and study of the various machines and technologies which take us to the skies.
Suggestions for Performance
Similar to Triumphus, the piece’s strength is in the melodic “A” part, and the pounding “D” part. As much as possible, the DMus should try to unite all the lower pitched instruments under the D part, and divide A and B parts among the rest of the ensemble so that the number of musicians on part A slightly outweighs those on part B. The “C” part fills some harmony, and should be represented, but is not very necessary.
Note that the Trombone “A” part has been modified to make the ‘rips’ in the opening motif more playable.
