"In Gethsemane’s Garden" is a hymn suitable for congregational or choral singing on Maundy Thursday or Good Friday. The words are from the Gospel accounts of Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane, as well as Hebrews 12:2 and the words of Christ from the cross (Psalm 22).

The tune, IMANDRA, is from the shape-note (sacred harp) tradition. Ananias Davisson (1780-1857) was a printer in Virginia and compiled "Kentucky Harmony," a shape-note tunebook, in 1816. It is not certain whether he actually wrote IMANDRA or just collected and harmonized it.

I think IMANDRA is one of the most beautiful and haunting melodies I have ever heard. But I couldn’t find it in any of my hymnals - hard to understand. Besides telling of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, this hymn is my attempt to rescue this lovely tune from oblivion. I liked this tune so much that I’ve also written another text for it.
