A metrical psalm; the words are a paraphrase of Psalm 139. This would be a good hymn for Sanctity of Life Sunday.

The writer of the tune is thought to be American William Walker, who collected melodies from southern Appalachia and camp meetings. He is best known for compiling the shape-note tunebook "The Southern Harmony," first published in 1835. The original anonymous lyrics are rather bizarre and are the source of the tune name, COMPLAINER. http://www.ccel.org/ccel/walker/harmony/files/hymn/Complainer.html

July, 2010: It took me a while to get around to finishing the paraphrase of the rest of this Psalm. For one thing, it was already too long, and I figured no one would sing 7 verses, much less 9. And there was that imprecatory section. But now it’s complete, just in case it could be useful.
