A bass clarinet alternative to the bassoon part is also provided for added flexibility.
The celebratory chorus ‘For He’s Going to Marry Yum-Yum’ features in the Act 1 finale of The Mikado (or The Town of Titipu). Set in Japan, The Mikado capitalised on a contemporary fascination with all things oriental. As with several of the other operas, the writers found they could satirise British customs, politics and institutions more effectively in the context of a fictional overseas setting. The same tune recurs in the Act 2 finale, with slightly different lyrics, as ‘For He’s Gone and Married Yum-Yum’.
