This hymn tune appeared in the Grenoble Antiphoner of 1753. It was used in the English Hymnal (1906) to set the words "O love, how deep, how broad, how high". Since then it has been used for many different texts. The present words in honour of St Luke were written by William Maclagan (1826-1910), Bishop of York from 1891 to 1908. Maclagan also wrote hymn tunes, including "Bread of heaven, on thee we feed" and "Palms of glory, raiment bright".
