This hymn tune appeared in the Grenoble Antiphoner of 1753. It was used in the English Hymnal (1906) to set the words "O love, how deep, how broad, how high". Since then it has been used for many different texts. The present words were written by Rowland Hill (1744-1833), although the last verse is probably anonymous, first appearing in "Hymns Ancient & Modern", 1868.
