The words were written in 1844 while Alford was the rector of Aston Standford church in Buckinghamshire, England. He set the hymn to George J. Elvey's hymn tune ST. GEORGE'S, WINDSOR in 1858. Composer Elvey was (1816–1893) was a prodigious English organist and composer. Of his best-known works produced chiefly between 1856 and 1860, many were composed for special services at St. George's Chapel. His most famous work is probably the hymn tune DIADEMATA ("Crown Him With Many Crowns"). Johann Crüger (1598–1662) the German composer of well-known hymns, composed the counter-melody in this arrangement, NUN DANKET ALLE GOTT. [WIKIPEDIA]
