This is a challenging arrangement by Martin Watson for Marching Band of When Johnny Comes Marching Home . When writing this arrangement I wanted to illustrate musically the conflicting feelings of triumph and tragedy faced by a battle-hardened soldier of the US Civil War.
The music is full of colour, and depicts the tramping of the soldiers, the clashes, cries and bugle-calls of battle, and includes a heart-wrenching solo for trumpet.
