"Veni Emmanuel," 15th Century French Plain Song melody, arranged and harmonized by Thomas Helmore (1811-1890) in Hymnal Noted, Part II (London: 1854). In 1851 John Mason Neale (1818-1866) translated some Latin verses entitled "Veni, Emmanuel" producing the well-known lyrics "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel. In 1854, Thomas Helmore arranged some music of uncertain origin to go with Neale's lyrics. The tune was probably derived from a fifteenth-century processional used by Franciscan nuns.
