This song is about the commercialisation of Christmas. A 2014 survey (link to PDF) revealed that 73% of people think that too much money is wasted on presents that people don’t want. Much gets spent on ’token’ presents that might perhaps better be given to charity or not spent at all, but nobody wants to be seen as a ’Scrooge’. We feel guilty if we don’t spend generously.
The words of this song intentionally paint an extreme picture. Most think that the reality isn’t really this bad. But do your own survey within your choir and compare results with those in the survey linked above.
I composed this song in 1982 (thanks Ryan for telling me you now sing it to your own children more than 30 years on). It started out as a unison song, with guitar accompaniment, in simple verse-chorus form. In 2014 I made this new version for 2-part (SA) choir with piano, adding a middle-8 section for more variety.
