The Trio for Clarinet, Horn, & Violin is divided into three sections; two roughly equal, contrasting sections and a third section which functions as a sort of coda. The first section is designed around a restricted set of pitches based off of a half-diminished seventh chord: E, G, A-flat, A, B-flat, D. The second section uses a set of pitches that is the inverse of the prime form of the set used in the first section( F-sharp, B-flat, B, C, C-sharp, E) and the third section will return to the thematic material and pitch set of the first section. The half-diminished seventh lacks the tension of the dominant seventh, the stability of the major (or minor) triad, or the purity of an open fifth; however, there is a focus on a subset of notes, namely: G, A, B-flat, and E. The cadences are designed to focus on this subset of notes and consequently there are many occasions where the piece seems to be in the key of G minor.
