It is sung by the bullfighter Escamillo as he enters in Act 2 (toréador is reference to "bullfighter"; although the actual correct term is torero, Bizet took some poetic license and "invented" a four-syllable word which he needed in order to match the musical motif), and describes various situations in the bullring, the cheering of the crowds and the fame that comes with victory.
