The play is a great favourite for study by English literature and theatre classes in Britain and the United States.
This was actually my first ever commission. A college friend was staging a production of She Stoops To Conquer and wanted Tony to sing the drinking song in the script. She could not find a tune and asked me to write one with a limited vocal range for the young actor who only had about an octave! (The range D-D is not quite high enough for tenor but would suit a newly broken voice or light baritone with little singing experience).
At that point she did not need an accompaniment - that is a recent addition. I have since found the lyrics on-line in the Irish Treasury of Song but to this date still no tune. I hope my tune would not be too out of place in this period of time. I added a fiddle tune as a reference in time - they call for harp and fiddle in The Beggar's Opera which is of a similar date. Harper's these days are pretty rare however, so the accompaniment is for piano….
