Life occasionally throws up strange coincidences. Crawley Millenium Concert Band commissioned me to write this piece to commemorate one of their members, Tim Burtenshaw - a clarinettist, who was killed in a road accident last year, completely unaware that my only other composition in this genre was written three years ago for Bourne Concert Band to commemorate a member of their band who died under exactly the same circumstances. Before writing a note, I talked to Tim's dad, his friends in the band and their conductor, Sally, and from the information I gleaned I gradually put together a piece that combines a theme for Tim himself with snatches of music he played in the band, a touch of Bob Marley, and finally the anthem associated with Tim's love of rugby - Swing Low Sweet Chariot.
