This song for Soprano and Piano is the second in this set from poems by Thomas Hardy which he called Satires Of Circumstance.. It tells of a pre-wedding talk between a mother and her daughter the bride-to-be in which the mother tells her daughter that the groom was not her parents' choice. The daughter asks why the didn't insist on her not choosing him and the mother replies that the daughter insisted it was this one or none. She says they should have been stronger in their conviction as she now realizes that they were right all along and she was wrong, The groom arrives ready for the ceremony and the daughter is now resigned to the fact that she has to go through with the wedding.
