The words to this hymn were sung at the dedication of the Kirtland LDS Temple in 1836, but not to the tune used today. The first tune associated with these words is American Star, which was soon replaced by a tune named Hosannah, which was the tune sung in the Kirtland Temple. The tune Hosannah remains unidentified, but there are a few hints: it was probably in triple time rather than the common time tune used today; it was probably a traditional tune and not newly written; and the hymn "Now Let Us Rejoice" was also sung to this tune at the Kirtland Temple dedication. The first hymnal with music published for LDS use in 1844 sets "The Spirit of God" to the currently used tune, but sets "Now Let Us Rejoice" to an otherwise unknown, and rather awkward, tune that bears some resemblance to the Ash Grove. Since "Now Let Us Rejoice" was also sung to the lost tune Hosannah, it is possible that this 1844 tune might be similar to that lost tune. This is my admittedly convoluted justification for the present arrangement, which I believe fits these inspiring words quite well. Let me know what you think!
