This is the first movement of an intended suite of pieces based on traditional music from the different regions of Scotland.

This first movement uses a Waulking Song sang into my phone by the Fiona MacKenzie (formerly the Mairi Mhor Song Fellow) and the ballad 'The Dark Isle'. It has been arranged for Symphonic Wind Band/ Concert Band although it might equally work in an orchestral version.

Structurally the piece is in a simple ABA form, starting in Bb Major before moving to D minor for the middle section. Modulations to other keys was intentionally not used, rather constant variation of the accompaniment is used to keep the interest going. There are also a couple of rude interruptions to liven things up!
