The Death of Åse was originally composed as part of the incidental music for Ibsen’s play Peer Gynt. Over 10 years later, Grieg selected certain elements from this work, organising these into two orchestral suites. The Death of Åse features in the first suite, Op. 46, along with Morning, Anitra’s Dance and In the Hall of the Mountain King.

Åse is the mother of Peer Gynt. When her son absconds with the daughter of an affluent local farmer, Åse sacrifices everything to pay the penalties on his behalf and, left destitute, dies of poverty and illness.
