Fauré’s Pavane in F# minor, Op. 50 was originally written for piano but the composer reworked the piece in 1887 as a version for orchestra. Faure subsequently decided to dedicate the work to his patron, Elisabeth, Comtesse Greffulhe, agreeing to her suggestion of adding a choir to make the performance seem more of a grand occasion.

In addition to Fauré’s own versions, the Pavane has been arranged for a wide variety of instrumental permutations. One of the composer’s best-known works, it has also made its mark in popular culture. The Pavane was played during television coverage of the 1998 FIFA World Cup and has been sampled in songs by Norma Ray and SClub7.
