A busy and noisy central presto is flanked by Adagio sections where melody and calm are to the fore. However it was my theory at the time that everyone went to sleep through slow movements, so I put a tremendous percussion crash after the first phrase to keep the audience awake. At the first performance one unfortunate member of the audience sitting on a bench behind the percussion section actually fell off his seat.
