My first symphony was composed between 1958 and 1960. The sketch for the first movement was completed when I was still at school at the age of 17. When I went to Cambridge in 1959 I showed the sketches to Sir David Willcocks who was then Director of Music at King’s College Chapel and the conductor of the University Orchestra. To my great excitement he told me that if I were to score the piece for full orchestra he would perform it with the University Orchestra. The first performance took place on St Cecilia’s day (Novemnber 21) 1961.
