It should be readily apparent that this piece, like many others, is influenced by the very well known Solo Cello Suites by J.S. Bach. The Suite for Solo Viola in C minor is designed to evoke the older dance forms of the Bach Suites, but avoids any commitment to a particular form.
Conventionally tonal and with some very sparse Jazz influence, I consider this piece to be a significant step in my development as a composer. Bach is a master of constructing implied harmonies and counter-melodies and writing my own Suite forced me to think about the deeper structures in music.
