The Quartet was originally composed for friends who often played my quartets and other works at informal musical gatherings. Unfortunately they disbanded before this particular quartet was played. The two middle movements are taken from a chamber opera for no other reason than I had just finished it and the music was still very much in my mind. The opera in question is based on The Franklin’s Tale from Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales. The song is where Dorigen is contemplating the rocks around the coast of Britany. The dance is used to begin the scene where Aurelius first makes advances to Dorigen. All four movements are played without a break.
