William Jones (1726-1800), clergyman, author and composer, was per­pe­tu­al Cur­ate of Nay­land, Suf­folk and was known as "Jones of Nayland". He was one of the most prominent churchmen of his time. "St Stephen" appeared in his "Ten Church Pieces for the Organ" (1789) and its popularity has continued to this day. It is known as "Newington" in Scotland.
