John Ellerton's magnificent evening hymn was written in 1870 for "A Liturgy for Missionary Meetings", and revised for "Church Hymns" (1871). Clement Scholefield was curate at the church where Arthur Sullivan was organist and his tune appeared in Sullivan's "Church Hymns with Tunes" (1874). This hymn was sung at Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897 and at the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II in 2022.
