The Four Seasons is a series of four violin concerti written by Italian baroque composer Antonio Vivaldi (1678 – 1741). The works are some of the earliest examples of program music: material with a narrative element. When published, each concerto was accompanied by a short descriptive fragment, illustrating the particular aspects of the season represented in the music.
'Spring I' is the first movement of the first concerto. It depicts the return of spring, with choruses of birdsong and streams rippled by the breezes. This pastoral tranquillity is disrupted by a fleeting thunderstorm, before the birds resume their singing.
