A charming traditional tune, arranged for mixed woodwind trio of 2 Flutes plus B-flat Clarinet or Bassoon.

The Hornpipe originated as a country dance, taking its name from the instrument used to provide the musical accompaniment. The hornpipe was a bit like an early clarinet, or chalumeau, with a bell made of horn. Later, these dances came to be particularly associated with sailors and the sea – possibly because the hornpipe survived the rough, wet conditions of ocean life more successfully than other instruments. The reason for the Sheffield Hornpipe’s association with the South Yorkshire city is unclear. However, to this day, the area has a high concentration of Morris dance teams – so folk dance clearly plays an important part in local culture.
