’Southwell’ is the tune generally used for the Lenten hymn ’Lord Jesus, think on me.’ Organists will be happy to improvise on this melody, but other instruments may need a little help - hence these variations. They could be used as a stand-alone communion instrumental or individual variations could be used to add variety when singing the hymn. Omit, reorder or repeat variations ad lib. Any instruments may be used, as this is merely a default setting. So far it has rarely been played exactly as written, and saxophone and clarinet have taken part. The flute part looks horrific, but was managed well by two different flautists, so stands. However, the other players should be sympathetic to the flautist’s need to breathe!
