Way back when, when I was in my first church music group in the late seventies as a teenager, the priest insisted to the music leader that the psalm be sung, not just recited as it had been for years at the Church of the Resurrection Catholic parish in Ellicott City, MD. Well, the music leader didn’t know what to do because there weren’t that many psalm resources back then as there are now. So I said, "I could write one!" I think I was about 13 or 14 years old. So they planned for me to write this one, for the Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, Yr. B. And we did it! It was too much to work up one every week though, so I think they ended up compromising, and the leader came up with a melody for the response every week (or used the ones from the then new Respond & Acclaim, I forget), but the verses were recited by the cantor. But the seed was planted way back then for a complete collection. Honestly I didn’t even know the Lord back then, I just did it as a musical challenge!
