REFRAIN THY VOICE FROM WEEPING
From THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD
An oratorio by Sir Arthur Sullivan composed in 1873
Text selected from the Bible by the composer.
The tenor Air Refrain thy voice from weeping comes from the first part of Sullivans longest oratorio The Light of the World which is set in Bethlehem on the eve of the birth of our Lord, which is foretold by a prologue chorus There shall come forth a rod. The work begins with a short orchestral introduction notable for rising octaves as in the In Memoriam Overture, which received its first performance at the Norwich Festival, on 30th October 1866. In 1869 Sullivan composed the first of his three oratorios The Prodigal Son, which was first performed at the Three Choirs Festival in Worcester on the 8th September of that year, and the final oratorio in the triptych The Golden Legend, which is also known as a cantata, was composed in 1886.
