FRANCES ALLITSEN, a lady ballad composer was born in 1849 and died in 1912. She studied at the Guildhall School of Music and was a professional singer, but she by no means confined herself to composing ballads. Although she composed many songs that are mostly cast in the ballad genre, and include A Song of Thanksgiving, Love�s Despair, �There�s a Land�. �Love is a Bubble�, �The Sou�wester�, �Youth and Margaret�; the best known of these however is �The Lute Player�. �The Lord is My Light� is one of her sacred ballads. Her other works include a Piano Sonata, a �Cantata for the Queen�, written in Coronation year (1911), a �Suite de Ballet� and two overtures.
