Lieder-meister Franz Schubert composed this version of the 23rd Psalm when he was 23 years old, in 1820. A too-infrequently-heard jewel, the piece was a gift for a voice-teacher friend of Schubert’s. The original SSAA (four singers only) arrangement included a lilting, obbligato-like piano accompaniment. I have transposed the key down from A-flat to F major to suit a mixed choir of male and female singers and removed the accompaniment, as the harmonies work beautifully a cappella (although a vocal reduction is supplied for rehearsal).
