I always imagined that Satie's original title Gymnopedie referred to the 'jumping around' in the L.H. of his composition - a type of gymnastics! I am probably completely wrong in thinking this but the idea stuck with me. Has anyone noticed that Sibelius Software has difficulties interpreting slow-moving keyboard music? If you try this piece at home you should probably experiment with a considerably slower tempo than the one I have indicated here at the website. There should be a noticeable rit. at b.26 and an increase in volume at b.27 where 'the sun comes out' - b.31 is even louder! 1997 was not a good year for writing dynamics and expression and I hope to get around to presenting a more complete version of this score at an early opportunity.
